Passion Drives The Team At Retirement Solutions Group
Alan Becker doesn’t like being told what he cannot do.
At the beginning of his financial services career, when he worked solely in insurance, he wrote policies that were best for his clients. Then he was told he couldn’t offer certain products even though those products might be the best fit for his clients’ circumstances.
“When you’re captive rather than independent, you are at the mercy of the company you’re contracted with, even though it should be all about what works for each person,” says Becker. “That’s why I went out on my own; I can do everything under one umbrella and serve clients in a way that is most beneficial to them.”
That’s the short story of why Becker, president and chief executive officer of Retirement Solutions Group, Inc. (RSG), started his retirement planning and financial services firm. The focus is laser clear: to offer retirees and pre-retirees a comprehensive approach to retirement and financial planning, which includes but is not limited to the use of insurance products.
Despite being born in Louisiana, Becker calls Kansas City home.
“I’ve claimed Kansas City as home since the seventh grade,” says Becker. “The Chiefs and the Royals are the only two teams I’ve ever rooted for, and I cannot think of a better place to raise a family.”
Like his father, Becker is a veteran. At 17 he asked his parents if he could join the Navy, then served two tours in the Gulf.
“I believe that everyone should serve,” he says, “whether that’s in the military, the Peace Corps or Job Corps.”
After trying other jobs on for size, Becker, a Shawnee Mission South alum, reconnected with his best friend from high school who was selling insurance. His competitive streak took over and his gift for gab propelled him into the insurance world. He spent the next decade working in union benefits, in the long-term care and Medicare domains and managing a Pennsylvania Life branch in Overland Park.
He then struck out on his own and now enjoys working one-on-one with clients, providing solutions to their problems and getting to know them so he can help secure their futures.
“What’s funny about this industry is that financial advice is always questioned, no matter how expert the advice,” says Becker. “There are so many voices out there, it can be difficult to know who to trust. To me, trust starts with truly getting to know clients, then treating them like family. It’s important that I explain things in a way that makes sense to each person, and that my entire staff is knowledgeable and welcoming.
We are all passionate. We care about what we do and it shows in our conversations and our commitment. We’ve all experienced and empathize with much of what our clients go through such as disability issues, considering assisted care options and loving people who suffer from Alzheimer’s.”
After seven years in Olathe, Becker recently purchased a building in Overland Park with space to hold workshops and training events. With an estate planning attorney and investment advisors in the building, RSG will continue to fully serve clients in one place.
“My team specializes in people’s tomorrows, providing them with plans for a ‘sleep well’ retirement using our proprietary Round Table Retirement Process™,” he says.
And now Becker is adding a new title to his resume: published author. After years of prodding from clients and colleagues, his first book, “Return on Investment or Reliability of Income? The True Meaning of “ROI” During the Golden Years!” will be published in January. The book explains his philosophy and shares client experiences.
“What I want people to know is that there are no bad investment products,” says Becker. “Only bad uses of investment products in a given scenario. Ask questions. Look for information. But know it will ultimately come to a leap of faith, and you’ll eventually have to make a decision to realize your retirement and financial goals.”
