Madison Sloan Grissom and Kirk Joseph Porter were married on September 5, 2015, in back yard of the bride’s parents, Grant and Kathy Grissom. Pictures were a quick walk to South Lake Park, in Overland Park. The groom’s parents, Chip and Sherry Porter, traveled from Chicago for the ceremony. Guests came from all over the country to celebrate this one-of-a-kind wedding celebration.
The groom is a logistics officer in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Riley and the bride is the marketing director at C.L. Hoover Opera House in Junction City.
Madison’s bridesmaids included a blend of high school friends, sorority sisters and other college friends. Kirk’s groomsmen included his brother, three brothers of the bride and three longtime friends.
Having a genuine, heart-felt, authentic wedding was goal throughout the wedding planning process. From naming their specialty drinks after their cats, to writing their own vows, everything had a personal touch.
They supported several local vendors including the Bali Root Band, Mi Ranchito Mexican Restaurant, The Upper Crust pie bakery, Craig Sole flowers and Taylor Kelley Photography. The bridal party’s hair was done by Morgan Zammit, and makeup by Katie Mahr.
Kirk and the groomsmen sported light grey Joseph Abboud tuxes from Men’s Warehouse, with varied bow ties chosen by the groom. Madison designed her own dress and found a dressmaker on Etsy to carry out her vision. The bridesmaids were given a color by the bride and each picked their own dress.
Their favorite memory includes getting the backyard “wedding ready” with lots of help from family and friends. From digging out the playground, planting hundreds of flowers, hanging thousands of lights, to building the dance floor, there was never a dull moment.
Kirk and Madison left the day after the wedding to travel to Greece for a wonderful two-week honeymoon.
